Parallel: s02e03 - School Reunion x s04e13 - Journey’s End
But no really can we seriously please have Chesterton back for series 8 PLEASE
because you have the opportunity to make him the mysterious twinkly-eyed old wise man, who always seems to know more than you.
and then it’s revealed that he’s one of the first people to ever go in the TARDIS (that is, if you don’t know who Ian Chesterton is) and it’s very exiting, and its bringing back the Doctor’s past, similar to how Gallifrey was brought back. And we could have Ian reveal scandalous things about the Doctor, such as how he basically used to hate Humans, and how it was him and Barbara that got him to fall in love with this planet
PLEASE I NEED IT TO HAPPEN IN SOME SHAPE OR FORM
*Chesterton requirement intensifies*
Here’s what makes them different: Amy is broken, angry, and scared of responsibility. Clara is responsible and often afraid, but typically adventurous and light-hearted. River is sensual, capable, independent, and self-sacrificing. Their lives do not all revolve around the Doctor. Amy’s life is a struggle between home and adventure, and that is SYMBOLIZED in Rory and the Doctor. Clara lives a perfectly normal, happy home life and jaunts off with the Doctor on Wednesdays. River has a whole life outside of the Doctor, with friends and a profession she loves. Her life kind of revolves around the Doctor, but she was programmed to kill him and then she married him, so it makes sense.
I can say that Rose, Martha, and Donna were all sassy, had low self esteem, and didn’t follow orders. How does that sound? You cannot boil complex characters down to their most basic traits and then say they’re all the same. Rose was very flirty. Donna was very fiery. All of their lives revolved around the Doctor. Rose in particular spent years doing nothing but searching for the Doctor.
This is not a Moffat problem. This isn’t a problem at all. This is an issue entirely made up by fans who want something to complain about.
I mean, can you imagine Amy looking after teenage children for a living? (You might have a bit more leeway after Series Six, but I’m still not sure it’d be something she’d ever want to do.) Or Clara being a model? We’ve seen both River and Clara stand over their mother’s grave but it was only Clara crying, River didn’t shed a single tear. Would Amy have ever declared she did something ‘disgracefully’? Would Clara ever call someone ‘stupid face’ as a term of endearment? And so on…
Yes yes yes yes yes thank you
You have no idea how much I love you right now
WHOA WHOA WHOA. I do have a problem with Moffat’s women and his writing in general. But I also have a problem with fans who inarticulately complain about the same things I do, because they give a bad name to our cause.
I have a problem with how little we know about his characters. They don’t seem to have a life before the Doctor. I know that Amy was working as a kissogram, River….River doesn’t count for this one, and Clara took care of children…but how did that define them? Who were their friends? The only friend we see of Amy’s is Mels…who is River. I never saw Amy’s aunt, and her character didn’t change much for her having her parents back after the universe reboot—and I would think that it would. Her parents are not a part of her later life—all we see of them is they’re at her wedding. She never talks about them or her aunt who took care of her. I felt like I do when I first meet a person—I’d never say every person I meet is the same, but all I meet is their surface at first, to go deeper, I have to get to know them. NOTHING Amy did surprised me. Her character was one of face value. What you see is what you get. There’s no development arc for her except for the little love triangle thing. I feel like I’m getting glimpses of her life, like seeing a chessboard every five moves or so, which doesn’t let me follow the game, it just lets me appreciate there’s a chess match on.
River….”she has a profession she loves [outside the Doctor]”. Scuse me, she became an archeologist because that’s the best way to find him. I’m not going to bash that decision, but it’s not fair to say that Rose spent her life after Doomsday doing nothing but look for the Doctor, because that’s essentially what River did. Rose went and worked for Torchwood, and ended up looking for the Doctor not just for personal reasons, but to warn him about the stars going out. I’m sure River made discoveries, too, but we never hear about it. SETTING ASIDE THAT ISSUE, BECAUSE I KNOW TOO MANY PEOPLE CAN MAKE THE SAME COMPARISONS DEPENDING ON THEIR OPINION. It bothers me that the Doctor had such a live and let live policy with River. She’s a psychopath. She herself has said it. That doesn’t make her sexy or a bad girl, it makes her a dangerous individual. Moffat likes to make the Doctor dangerous, and I suppose that’s what he’s tried to underline with River. But…the Doctor tries to save people. That’s what he does. Donna didn’t believe in herself, and he never gave up trying to convince her of her worth. I didn’t even see the Doctor attempt to help River lead a healthier life. He just left her in prison. There’s no call for that, even if he took her out nights. River literally doesn’t have a life outside the Doctor because she was conceived in the TARDIS, grew up being trained to kill him, married him, spent the rest of her life using him to get her out of trouble.
As for Clara, I’m still mad at the way she was used as a plot device. She has the makings of a lovely character, the kind you want to scratch the surface of, and I wish more was being done with her. I’m going to make another Rose parallel here because there are SO MANY, but the one I’m interested in is the Impossible Girl/Bad Wolf arcs and how differently they were handled. I complained to a friend once that if Moffat had been writing Rose, we’d have known Bad Wolf would be the season finale from the first episode of the first season, we’d have known Rose was “special”, and when the Bad Wolf thing actually happened, it would have been “ROES, YOU’RE MUCH MORE SPECIAL THAN I THOUGHT YOU HAVE TO KEEP TRAVELING WITH ME UNTIL I FIGURE OUT WHY” There is no why, sometimes ordinary people are extraordinary. Clara is actually the Moffat companion I have the least trouble with, because we have glimpses of her life before the Doctor. But. I saw her friends when she was a child, but she never mentions them.
That’s the crux of it. I’ve seen Rose and Donna and Martha…and Jack…speak about their lives, their friends, tell stories. I feel like they’re filled in. Moffat’s companions are either mysterious about their lives, transparent, or apparently don’t remember. They never talk about their lives outside the TARDIS, even though we see that they might have one. No stories. No, “My mate ___ said once, this is what we do in this situation”. No, “I remember when…”
I miss the days when companion arcs were subtle (Bad Wolf, never saw it coming, not even in the actual episode it happened, Woman Who Walked the Earth, not really a companion arc, but I suppose you could argue that it is…but did you see that finale coming?, Doctor/Donna, come on, that episode was fanfiction with the saddest ending ever. And then it was just a fulfillment of what we knew all along, and it was wonderful, not disappointing) The Impossible Girl arc drove me nuts, because Clara was hyped up to be this huge thing and then I have a “that was it?!” reaction to the Name of the Doctor. As for the River arcs, the Doctor must be stupider than me, because I had all the puzzle pieces fit together as to what she was long before he did, and I wasn’t using Tumblr at the time. Amy hasn’t got an arc.
I hope that Clara will be more fleshed out now that she’s not a plot device anymore. We’ll see…
